Background of the Study
Women have historically played a central role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, yet their contributions are often undervalued or ignored in conflict-ridden regions (Aminu & Rahila, 2023). In Maiduguri Local Government Area, Borno State, the prolonged insurgency has exacerbated gender-based violence and created significant challenges for women’s participation in peace processes (Garba & Tukur, 2024). Despite these challenges, women have been instrumental in local peacebuilding efforts, using their networks, influence, and grassroots involvement to mediate conflicts and promote stability (Ibrahim & Musa, 2025). This study explores the level of women’s inclusion in peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Maiduguri, investigating the policies and programs that support or hinder their participation in such processes, and assessing the impact of their involvement on the outcomes of peace efforts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Women in Maiduguri have been largely excluded from formal peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes despite their active roles in informal conflict mediation and community stabilization efforts (Lawal & Shehu, 2023). The exclusion of women from decision-making bodies and peace negotiations limits the effectiveness of these processes, as the unique perspectives and contributions of women are not fully integrated (Abubakar & Chinyere, 2024). This study seeks to assess the extent to which women are included in peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Maiduguri, and the challenges they face in these processes.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the level of women’s inclusion in formal peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes in Maiduguri.

  • To assess the impact of women’s participation in peacebuilding on the effectiveness of conflict resolution efforts in Maiduguri.

  • To identify the challenges that women face in participating in peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Maiduguri.

1.4 Research Questions

  • To what extent are women included in formal peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes in Maiduguri?

  • How does women’s participation in peacebuilding affect the outcomes of conflict resolution in Maiduguri?

  • What challenges hinder women’s active participation in peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Maiduguri?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Women’s inclusion in peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes positively impacts the effectiveness of peace efforts in Maiduguri.

  • Cultural and institutional barriers limit women’s participation in formal peacebuilding processes in Maiduguri.

  • Women in Maiduguri face significant challenges in being included in peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of women in peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Maiduguri, highlighting the need for greater inclusion of women in formal peace processes. The findings will inform policy reforms aimed at enhancing women’s participation in peacebuilding and strengthening the effectiveness of conflict resolution efforts in conflict-affected regions.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on women’s inclusion in peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Maiduguri Local Government Area. Limitations include difficulties in accessing local peacebuilding data and potential challenges in interviewing women involved in informal peace efforts due to security concerns.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Peacebuilding: Efforts aimed at preventing conflict, fostering stability, and promoting social cohesion in post-conflict societies.

  • Conflict Resolution: The process of resolving disputes and tensions between conflicting groups, often involving negotiation, mediation, and reconciliation.

  • Inclusion: The active participation and integration of individuals or groups, such as women, in decision-making processes and activities.
